International Nurses Day is celebrated around the world every May 12, to commemorate the birth of Florence Nightingale.

Florence Nightingale is famously known for organising nursing into a respected profession. Back in 1860, she made an official nurses training program. Before then, nursing was often seen as a menial job. However, through her integration of modern medicine into nursing and the foundation of the first ever nursing school at the St Thomas Hospital in London, the profession was elevated to one of the most trusted and respected professions in the world.

This year the theme is “Nurses, A voice to Lead”

Nurses are often required to work in high stress ‘life or death’ situations. It is both a physically and emotionally demanding occupation. We are grateful that many nurses say that they feel it is their calling.

International Nurses Day aims to celebrate the critical role nurses play in maintaining a healthy and fit society. Sometimes it can be a thankless task. On this day people everywhere take time to acknowledge the hard work, dedication and sacrifice nurses make.

Aster Home Care got the celebration off to a start with a lavish spread of everything sweet; cakes, fruits, and chocolate biscuits were on the menu.

But more importantly, it was a time for our nursing staff to connect and catch up. Home nursing can be a solo occupation but the moments when nurses can get together often provides that feeling of community and support that might be missing in such an autonomous role.
